One very easy way to get familiar with HF(Shortwave) bands is to tune inãusing a webSDR. I like using K3FEF's because he's in the eastern NA area likeãme, but you can hop on one anywhere, and you'll get an idea of programmingãand propagation from different areas.ããYou can also pick up inexpensive USB SDR dongles on Amazon and get familiarãwith tuning across a huge range of spectrum.ãã--- Mystic BBS v1.12 A45 2020/02/18 (Linux/64)ã * Origin: The Bottomless Abyss BBS * bbs.bottomlessabyss.netã

I don't know why I didn't mention SDR dongles. They do require aãlittle more fiddling, though, and the stock antennas leave much to be desired.ãSeems like you could get more (use and satisfaction) out of an SDR dongle afterãyou are familiar with the radio a bit more.ããMan, the price of them really has gone up. You used to be able to pick one upãfor $6-7 shipped. Now looks like if you go to eBay and search for RTL2832, thenãsort by price low to high, the cheapest one is about $13 shipped. Still worthãit, but under $10 is nice :)ããOnce you've got one of those, you can even map APRS use in your area. AutomaticãPacket Reporting System is often used by people in their vehicles to transmitãtheir position coordinates. In the USA, usually the standard frequency for thatãis 144.390mhz where you will hear short bursts of modulated data. On WindblowsãI use Pinpoint APRS software. On OSuX, I use CubicSDR (or GQRX) and QTH.app.ãIf you have a "digipeater" nearby, you could probably hear from all over yourãtown and see people driving around on the map.ãã---ã þ Synchronet þ TIRED of waiting 2 hours for a taco? So you don't need a license for the SDR dongle usage. SDR dongles are super cheap, so little risk to your investment.ããHandhelds are great for *chatting* with folks or listening to a lot of chatter (if you don't have a license), but only somewhat locally to you (VHF/UHF) or (and most often) using repeaters.ããSo... both?ã-- ã digital man (rob)ããBreaking Bad quote #12:ã[Walt] Looks like Keith Richards with a glass a warm milk! - Hank SchraderãNorco, CA WX: 96.2øF, 24.0% humidity, 6 mph SSE wind, 0.00 inches rain/24hrsã---ã þ Synchronet þ Vertrauen þ Home of Synchronet þ [vert/cvs/bbs].synchro.netã
