Have any of you guys used the ARDC portal at ampr.org to request any of the free IP address(es) available to amateur radio operators yet??
Let me know, I think this is very cool and would like to know other peoples thoughts, feelings, etc on the subject.
I believe Cyan still has some address space from them that he uses. You'd know him as the guy who wrote the Synchronet IRCD. If you can get in touch
A bit of scandal a few years back when ARDC sold off a chunk of the address space to (I think) Amazon. Partly just on principle, partly with the question being raised of whether they even had the ownership/right to do so. They've since been using the proceeds to fund a grant, and if you have a cool digital ham radio project in mind you can apply for some of that money.
I guess I'm okay with it if they manage the money well and use it to benefit the hobby in perpetuity. Time will tell. Most of that address space was going unused, after all. We lose radio spectrum if we don't use it too, and with less direct benefit from the proceeds of the sale.
i'm willing to bet there are TONS of amateur radio operators out there who have no idea they even exist.. It's not like they are openly trying to tell anyone. I knew nothing about it until I had first saw the news story
I hope that is what is going to happen, but you know how that is. It just
As I understand it they have been giving out grants already. I only hope the money is wisely invested so they can keep on doing that basically forever.
I get it, the range was under-utilized so hey, lets sell some off.. BUT i'm willing to bet there are TONS of amateur radio operators out there who have no idea they even exist.. It's not like they are openly trying to tell anyone. I knew nothing about it until I had first saw the news story about them selling some of it off.
