I splurged on a new/used system, needed something with a bit moreãhorsepower.ããOld: Dell Inspiron, 4th gen i7, 16 GB of RAM, no TPM, wonky bios. Itãloses the time and date every time I turn it off, even with a newãbattery.ããNew: Dell Optiplex, 9th gen i7, 64 GB of RAM, TPM for Windows 11ããThe new system has 2 PCI-x 16 slots instead of one, and an NVMe slot forãlater down the road.ããIt's got DisplayPort instead of HDMI, surprisingly I could only getã1920x1080 out of them. I installed a video card, and it also would onlyãdo 1920x1080. When I used the HDMI port on the card, I was able toãget 2540x1080 out of my ultrawide. Apparently I might need new cables ifãI want to support this monitor with DP.ããNo wireless or Bluetooth, not a major deal. I put a USB bluetooth dongleãon and I've got ethernet.ãããã... Had to reread a second time with one of the other voices in my head.ã You have bluetooth wireless AND you have ethernet. I prefer a wiredãconnection myself, all my PCs are 1000BaseT ethernet as well. I'll neverã PF> go back.ããThis past year, I bumped my main switch to 10gb ethernet, and bumped up to a Cat6 commercial grade AP... I typically test between 400-800mbps wireless throughput depending where in the house I am. I have a 10gb ethernet card for my desktop, but I'd need to remove my windows drive in order to free up the slot to use it (pcie 4x to nvme adapter). My incoming internet is now 2gb (2335mbps), I also got a 10gb ethernet card in my NAS, and other network devices are 2.5gb. So I'm set for a while now.ããStill have a few more wired ethernet drops I want done in my house, but the wifi6 throughput has mostly obviated the urgency. I've tried powerline adapters before, but wasn't much better than 802.11g wifi in my experience.ã ã ã-- ãMichael J. The cable modem and the BBS were on oneãbox, and powerline was good for around 200 mbps on a speedtest. Myãoffice was on the second box, and I was lucky if I got 30-40. And inconsistent througput is not fun at all, can only imagin the packet errors and retries if watching/logging.ãã PF> The other benefit to running ethernet was being able to set up an AP onã PF> the office end to act as a 4-port switch and a wireless repeater.ããCool... I've got a couple wifi to lan receivers I wound up not needing, which I may use in the future... my single AP in the middle of the house on the second floor reaches the entire property just fine (which isn't that big), can get to the back patio and yard fine, as well as into my car, which sometimes has issues with continuity for calls as I'm driving away.ã ã ã-- ãMichael J.
