OK, what even is "Internet Discussion" after all?

Maybe on-topic... I am happy to have fiber service to my home as of a few months ago. Symmetric 1Gbps with low latency for less than the 1Gb/35Mbps service from the cable company.

Fiber definitely has been the best internet we’ve had. 1g up and down but they have 3 and 6gb plans. I have no endpoints that support that and not
buying new gear. I remember my first DSL was 128k down … then cable at 1mb …
first was 56k frame relay. Yikes. That was the jam.

Man, I remember the very first time I saw a download at 1megabyte per second. My heart probably skipped a beat. It was on a cablemodem that used dialup for upstream, even.

I had a nice chat with the AT&T tech out to do some cable maintenance on
my street. Very candid, talked about the price increases after the first
year (AT&T marketing is very cloudy concerning the non-promo price)

Mostly, I wanted to talk to him about what they would and wouldn't be
able to do as part of the install and found out what fiber they need. I
think I can have them hand off the fiber at an NI alongside my house and
get into my office space with a single hole - or I may want to bring it
in another way and have my cable guy run the cable under the house to
    make it cleaner.

I'm looking forward to symmetric bandwidth, been wanting to back up my
NAS to the cloud for some time, but at 40mbps upload speed with
bandwidth caps, not going to go for it.

My first experience with the internet was a 56k leased line that came
from UC Berkeley to my company. My first cisco router, public IP
spaces, and 70+ people using that line. Thankfully, it was all text
back then and no one really knew about it except for a select few
    people and a mail gateway.

Speaking of frame relay, I worked for a Big Law Firm that had a frame
relay network. They ran a 256k CIR from the main NYC office to their
hubs, then 64K circuits to the branch offices.

One Monday, I find a conference room full of attorneys from the DC
office in a conference room complaining that the network was down. They
were trying to load files from a local server - over a 64K link from SF
to LA, a 256K line carrying all west coast traffic from LAX to NYC and
a third 64K link to DC. I suggested they all take turns logging in. You
know that comic trope when 3 people try to fit through a door at the
same time, get jammed in the doorway, then stop, think about it, decide
to go one at a time, then all try to go first? Yeah, like that.

I definitely have no need at this time for anything faster than gigabit. I can't imagine needing it soon. 10 years ago I had 3Mbps DSL and decided then it
was time to move on to cable. Maybe another 10 years I'll upgrade again.
