• Church Sound Board Picking up Radio

From Hatton@VERT/THRCORN to All on Sun Feb 28 18:39:01 2021
Back around Thanksgiving I helped our church identify and install a new video streaming setup... and became the de-facto operator of the system. Part of this also apparently included taking over the sound system as well.

It's actually quite a nice setup, the main board is a Mackie DL1608 that we can control either by computer and there are a number of wireless and wired microphones. It's with the latter that I've found a problem.

While remoted into the system I discovered that 4 of the longest wire-runs are somehow picking up a local radio station. I am able to mute them as they aren't currently used but need to figure out a way to get them back in service. The runs are roughly 90 - 100 feet each and I don't know what kind of wiring was used for them.

Does anyone have any suggestions or ideas on filtering out the signal?

    Thanks!
    Hatton

    Thanks for all the responses!

DM / Rampage: I know the runs are XLR cables but am unsure beyond that; I'll have to do some more research. Definitely worth digging up a floor plate and pulling the plug off the board to check.

Jimmy: I believe I have a pack of ferrites laying around, I'll see bring those when I take the screwdriver!

    Thanks again!

Now we're all invested. :-)ããPicking this thread back up as I was finally able to get into the building and do some testing.ããNote, this is just for the "worst offender" line. I believe I've isolated the issue to somewhere in the line between the microphone and the XLR jack. I finally got to where the jack is and unplugged the mic and there is no excess audio.ããLooking at the line, it's super thin and there's a section where the rubber/sheath is gone so the ground wire looks exposed. It was also coiled up and zip-tied. Spreading the cable out made no change so now I'm going to need to go back and test with the ferite.ããAt least I don't have to go chase the wire from the box to the board... at least I hope I don't.ããHattonãã... I remember using my sister’s record player in the basement of our house in the olden days and got radio playing through it. Radio frequencies always interfering with something else.
