It would have been much better to release ãthe source to those libraries so that porting to 32-bit compilers would be ãeasier (or maybe "possible" would be a better word)ããBut this is the BAJA sub, so let's move this to the Sync Discussion sub if ãwe're going to keep talking about it =)ããã---ã þ Synchronet þ þ Mars Base BBS - (360)882-0773 - Vancouver, WA ã

It uses custoã > libraries that aren't included (at least not in source form, which meansã > porting to other compilers is next to impossible unless you know exactly whaã > those libraries do and can thus write replacements)ããI realize this is an old message, but felt compelled to respond. ãão The released source code is not 16-bit only: The OS/2 and Win32 versionsã(both 32-bit) were compiled from the same code.ãão The only included library that didn't come with source (because I don't haveãit) rciol.obj, was for the DOS version only. I wrote a native OS/2 and Win32ãversion of this same library in C and included the source code for itã(riolib.c). You could still build the DOS version and modify it to your heartsãcontent without the source to rciol.obj. And if you wanted to know how the APIãworked, you have the C version (in riolib.c) to reference. rciol.obj wasãwritten in assembler and was not written for any specific "compiler". You justãlink it with your C obj files (compiled with any 16-bit x86 C compiler) and itãwould work. If you wanted to port the code to Linux or some other non-x86ãplatform, you would more likely start with the riolib.c source code as aãreference. So I'm not sure what this talk of "custom libraries" was all about.ããRobã---ã þ Synchronet þ Vertrauen þ Home of Synchronet þ [vert/cvs/bbs].synchro.netã

The C source code for a 32-bit version of this same libraryãis included in the source (riolib.c) and was used to build the OS/2 and Win32ãversions of SBBS. A port to a 32-bit compiler was more than "possible", it wasãalready done for you (the released source code compiled successfully withãBorland C++ for OS/2 and Borland C++ for Win32).ããPorting to a non-Borland compiler was also very "possible" (without anyãadditional source code), as I, myself, recently ported the code to MicrosoftãVisual C++ (32-bit) without much effort. The code I ported I got fromãSBBS_SRC.ZIP (just like anyone else could have).ããRobã---ã þ Synchronet þ Vertrauen þ Home of Synchronet þ [vert/cvs/bbs].synchro.netã

So I'm not sure what this talk of "customã > libraries" was all abou RobããHi! I just dropped in for a visit to see what's up with SBBS and DoveNet =)ããWell it's been well over a year since I looked at it, but I seem to recall ãseeing at least 2 or 3 .obj libraries (16-bit libraries compatable only with ãcertain Microsoft and Borland compilers) that didn't come with any matching .c ãcode that could be used in place of them (or as a basis for writing ones that ãcould). Maybe you released the .c source for riolib in a newer source release ãthan the one I had, or (more likely) I didn't see the riolib.c file.ããAnyways, congratulations on the native Win32 port of SBBS! If I ever get a DSL ãor cable connection to the Internet, I might revive Mars Base again (or maybe ãit will be called Reflex Point BBS, since my parents' box [that MB ran on] was ãnamed "Mars Base" by me, and the PII-450 I have now I call ReflexPoint =)ããI can't believe there are still posts from me here in the Dove subs... Looks ãlike I didn't do much Dove after 1998, although my BBS was up until July '99.ããOk I'm going to ramble now (as I have always been famous for) because I ãthought someone might be interested to know that there's an entire computer ãlab at the U of W whose NT boxes are named after characters from Red Dwarf =)ããLater,ãAragorn (actually I go by HunterZ these days, but SBBS still doesn't allow ãcapital letters in the middle of a word that's part of a handle =)ããP.S.
