• Raw or is it RAW ?

From Dennis Scott@VERT to All on Sun Mar 12 13:24:24 2023
Hello to All,ããI have a tiny little question that's related to something I saw earlier onãDiamond Mine BBS. While doing my normal things on there, a message popped up onãthe screen that said "so and so logged on using "RAW". I looked and mine saidãTelnet (as it should be), but what is "RAW"? ããThanks,ãDennisã--- SBBSecho 3.14-Win32ã * Origin: Diamond Mine Online BBS - bbs.dmine.net:24 (1:275/89)ã þ Synchronet þ Vertrauen þ Home of Synchronet þ [vert/cvs/bbs].synchro.netã

    Hi Dennis,

In the context of using a BBS, "RAW" typically refers to a method of connecting to the BBS over a raw TCP socket, rather than using a telnet client. This could be done using specialized software or by issuing raw socket commands from a command line tool like Telnet or PuTTY.

While raw connections may offer more flexibility than telnet in some cases, they can also be more prone to errors or security issues. Therefore, most BBSes predominantly rely on telnet connections as their primary connection method.

I hope this helps answer your question! Let me know if you have any other questions or concerns.

More likely the user is just using some retro hardware or software that doesn't support Telnet.ã-- ã digital man (rob)ããSynchronet "Real Fact" #116:ãSynchronet v1a r5 (for MS-DOS) was released on February 19, 1992ãNorco, CA WX: 65.2øF, 69.0% humidity, 11 mph ESE wind, 0.00 inches rain/24hrsã---ã þ Synchronet þ Vertrauen þ Home of Synchronet þ [vert/cvs/bbs].synchro.netã

Sorry, I'm just trying to learn here and I can't find anywhere online that tells of such things.ããThe BBS is connected to a switch connected to a router connected to the internet. So what hardware/software would allow passage of TCP thru all of that without using telnet via TCPIP.ããThanks,ãDennisã---ã þ Synchronet þ Vertrauen þ Home of Synchronet þ [vert/cvs/bbs].synchro.netã

So Raw probably means that person is on the same local TCIP network as theãBS,ã>ie, a local user?ããSyncterm allows you to specify RAW as a connection type to call a telnetãBBS with. I always suggest that people try RAW, if their terminal clientãsupports it, when calling my older DOS BBS. Otherwise, they may run intoãissues with double carriage returns and/or on file transfers.ããã * SLMR 2.1a * "I'm cold, and there are wolves after me!"-Granpa Simpsonãã---ã þ Synchronet þ CAPCITY2 * capcity2.synchro.net * Telnet/SSH:2022/Rlogin/HTTPã

It tries to establish screen size,ãterminal speed, and several other conditions. Raw connection is just that, aãraw TCP connection with no negotiation or handshake happening on connect.ãã---ã þ Synchronet þ TIRED of waiting 2 hours for a taco? GO TO TACOPRONTO.bbs.ioã
