    FreeDOS | The FreeDOS Project

    FreeDOS [1]

We are currently in soft-freeze in preparation for the FreeDOS "1.0" distribution.

2005-11-30 Bernd Blaauw has posted the FreeDOS Beta9 Service Release 2 [2] update 2. Currently it's available as a bootable CD-ROM, with an alternate separate bootdisk to access the CD-ROM. Please read the updated instructions
to avoid some known problems (5/06).

2005-09-07 Blair Campell has released an update to his FreeDOS FreeDOS Beta9 Enhanced Release CD [3] . Next version is expected for 6/2006.

FreeDOS aims to be a complete, free, 100% MS-DOS compatible operating system (mostly achieved.) Today, FreeDOS is ideal for anyone who wants to bundle a version of DOS without having to pay a royalty for use of DOS. FreeDOS will also work on old hardware, in DOS emulators, and in embedded systems. FreeDOS is also an invaluable resource for people who would like to develop their own operating system. While there are many free operating systems out there, no other free DOS-compatible operating system exists. About " [4]

    New Release: EMM386 2.10, HIMEM 3.13 [5]
    2006-07-09 09:40
Michael Devore has released a new version of FreeDOS EMM386/HIMEM: "Uploaded
to ftp://ftp.devoresoftware.com/downloads/emm386/ [6] are the files emmx210.zip, EMM386 version 2.10 and HIMEM version 3.13 memory managers,
mostly executables; and emms210.zip, source code files for the new release.
The latest revisions (effectively completed in May) contain several compatibility modifications and two bugfixes. The bugfixes apply to DOS-extended programs for certain DOS extenders running under large (>256M) free memory conditions. The compatibility modifications remove the need for a few programs to specify options or memory configurations to work correctly,
and they stop VDS warning feedback for users of DiamondWare's Sound Toolkit (DWSTK). Almost everyone is welcome and encouraged to give feedback on the revised memory managers, particularly should any problems persist." Read more for the details:

    New chkdsk 0.9 [8]
    2006-07-03 14:08
Imre Leber has released a new version of FreeDOS CHKDSK: "This version now has a status indicator in surface scan mode and does not stop the checking when a suspicious media descriptor was found. This release seems to be stable so it
is candidate for version 1." You can find it at: http://users.telenet.be/imre/FreeDOS/chkdsk09.zip [9]

    FreeDOS defrag beta 0.9 [11]
    2006-07-03 12:33
Imre Leber writes: "I am hereby posting a long overdue version of defrag. It has fixes regarding the interface. The command line interface now actually works and there is now the status bar is updated in "move file fragments together" mode. Further more there is now a check on FAT32 and a clear indication that this is not currently supported. I tested and I am quite sure that this is a stable release and a candidate for FreeDOS 1.0" You can find it at: http://users.telenet.be/imre/FreeDOS/defrag09.zip [12]

    FreeDOS 1.0 update [14]
    2006-07-01 12:25
Oh yes, FreeDOS is definitely still very much alive! Moving forward, I'm
trying to put the focus on our "1.0" release. What's done is done. Right now,
I want to get a "1.0" out there by end of July. We're already pretty stable,
so what we have by month end will be "1.0". I think we can do it. That means any extra stuff waits for "1.1" or "2.0", whatever we call the next distro after "1.0". Click "Read More" to see the schedule and read up on our "1.0" debut.

    FreeDOS NLSFUNC 0.3 [16]
    2006-07-01 12:16
Eduardo Casino writes: "I'd like to announce the availability of NLSFUNC version 0.3. It now uses generic IOCTL calls for changing device codepages, so it should be ready for FreeDOS 1.0. This version also works with current versions of DISPLAY (uses its int 2f interface if DISPLAY reports version < 1.0). NLSFUNC 0.3 needs latest development kernel (1.1.37w) to work." FreeDOS documentation wiki back online [20]
    2006-06-08 15:34
A few days ago, I restored a backup of our documentation Wiki and removed
heavy spamming (link farms) from dozens of pages. Twelve hours later, everything was totally spammed again. So, following JeremyD's example from http://wiki.fdos.org/ [21] (the tech wiki), the user documentation wiki on http://fd-doc.sourceforge.net/wiki/ [22] now uses a blocklist to stop spammers. I hope you will enjoy using the resurrected wikis for DOS-friendly things again now :-). The doc wiki also features the MetaFaq, which has pointers to our best FAQ entries...! By the way - the FAQ engine now has spam filtering, too...

Natural Language Processing on FreeDOS [24]
    2006-06-06 19:20
Francesco Zamblera writes: "I have developed an interesting Natural Language Processing application using FreePASCAL under FreeDOS, though I have released Windows and Linux versions too. It's a parser and generator for minimalist languages. I hope it will be also published by the Summer Institute of Linguistics; however, since it is a GNU GPL release, everyone can use it ...

    FreeDOS APPEND 5.0.0.6 [27]
    2006-05-16 07:47
Eduardo Casino writes: "I'd like to announce the availability of version 5.0.0.6 of FD APPEND, the command that enables programs to open data files in specified directories as if those files where in the current directory. With this version it is possible to call the resident append (i.e., after the first invocation) using a path in the command name. Thanks to Blair Campbell for the report and the test cases. Now, FD APPEND behaves more like its counterpart from Redmond. Source and binary packages are available at: http://perso.wanadoo.es/babelfish/append/appe506s.zip [28] and http://perso.wanadoo.es/babelfish/append/appe506x.zip [29] ..." This is also mirrored at

    More free DOS programs [37]
    2006-03-28 15:20
Tom writes: "Hi! We've had our development libraries and programs in sotrage a good number of years. Seeing QEMU and DOSBOX now has given us confidence that an effort in releasing our software for free would not be wasted on an absent audience. Please see
http://www.techass.com/dos/viewer.php?DocName=dosprods.txt [38] - Other than SimplySales and SimplyWrite, the programs may be nothing that spectacular. But (and it's not mentioned on the site yet) we plan on releasing our development libraries which many applications were written with. Two books published by Howard W. Sams feature these libraries but not on a commercial basis. Thanks!" This is great news. Huge props to Technology Associates Inc.
