Hi everyone,

Who among you will come to Brazil for the FIFA World cup 2014 ?

On June 13, we will have the match of Spain x Netherlands in Salvador, a
bit far from São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro...

We will also have Argentina, England, France, Italy, Japan and South Korea,
all MSX-ish countries.

Perhaps a good opportunity to personally meet. Or for you collectors to buy Brazilian MSX computers and cartridges.

Some years ago, I posted on MSX.org about doing an "international"
MSX meeting, during the world cup, so people in Brazil for the WC
could meet us "Fudebas".

The idea I proposed was to take the small break in the World Cup
after the 'groups stage' is over (usually a week, so tourists can see
the country) and do the event somewhere near Maracanã Stadium, so it
would be somewhere easy to be found by tourists...

...the idea was not very well received, and some points raised were
actually very good: mainly prices in general (usually during world
cup prices are much higher than normal for flights, hotels, etc) -
and the huge ammount of people attending to the world cup, making it
difficult to get anywhere.

I then gave up on the idea. If someone wants to do it, then by all
means, do it - the way my year started, I'll probably be too busy -
maybe even to attend to an MSX meeting :(

It's very difficult to have any MSX meetings near Maracanã Stadium.
Talk is cheap, show us the place... We have UERJ (university), which
isn't exactly cheap to rent a room or two, to a MSX meeting. We used a
room in the Physics' Institute in 1998, and it wasn't exactly pleasant
to us... And the rules to hire any government's space (UERJ belongs to
the Rio de Janeiro's state) to a particular event changed. I tried the
school where my wife works, it's in Vila Isabel, close to Maracanã
Stadium (and a hospital too), but her boss told her that today is
nearly impossible.

In the beginning of 2013, people from SESC Engenho de Dentro (which
rents a room for us with a reasonable price) told me that they won't
rent that room anymore, due to changes in the room's shape. So, we
started again to find another place to have our MSX meetings, the
MSXRio. I found a very nice school, near Maracanã. It's a secondary
school (Colégio Graham Bell), a bit more expensive than SESC Engenho
de Dentro, but it's near metro and train stations, and close to
Maracanã Stadium. We had 2 meetings there, in 2013. But the teachers'
co-op which manages the school are in a quarrel with the union who
owns the school. As the director said to me, maybe by the end of 2014
we can have the MSX meeting again in Graham Bell, but it's too
difficult to talk about dates.

Finally, we got a big room in SESC Madureira, which is far from the
centre (even more far than Engenho de Dentro), but maybe it's the best
place that we'll have since 1997. And it's close to most of the
MSX-freaks' homes. So, if anybody wants to hire a MSX meeting during
the World Cup in Rio, please tell me, I think I can handle a fifth
meeting in SESC Madureira. Our dates are:

15th February (Saturday)
2nd and 3rd May (Friday and Saturday, after Labor Day - holiday).
18th October (Saturday)

RetroRio (which is like MSXRio but it's not MSX restricted) will be
held in the same place by 16th August.

Hope everybody can come to one of our meetings, even Slotman, who are
always too busy to attend any MSX meetings. =)

We won't have any meetings during the World Cup. Maybe I'll be in
Europe during this period. (And I'm going to Netherlands too! =D) If
anyone wants to manage this meeting, be my guest, amaze me. ;-)

As I said, I proposed that idea *a long time ago* - in 2010 to be

I'm sorry to hear that you guys are having problems with Graham Bell
school... sounded as a really nice location. Maybe would be worth
asking about how people organized the "canal-3" meeting? It was
somewhere near (I think in the same street as Graham Bell), but I
don't know for sure.

One place near Maracanã, which I'm negotianting with them as a
possible location to "Joga Brasil" (To those who don't know what this
is, is a brazilian games development event) - is the University
"Veiga de Almeida". Maybe if I manage to close the deal to my event,
I'd be able to propose a MSX Rio there...? I can't promess anything,
it's been over a month I've been talking to them through emails, and
haven't even met someone face to face yet.

Another place is the SENAI, also near Maracanã. If you want, I can
pass along a contact I have there - but be warned, those guys are
slow and not very reliable (I talked to them for over 4 months, 2
years in a row, and couldn't make JB there because the space they
promised me was later used as a storage room) - but they have a room
where they make regular expositions, and that room could easily host
an MSX meeting event.

Anyway, I'm busy as hell here - between making my games, university
and other works, I can barely sleep (who said Brazil only starts
after Carnival...?) - let alone organize an MSX meeting... and for
what I had in mind, I don't think there is enough time now to do it
(even for people outside Brazil, buying *now* tickets and reserving
hotels to june will be a hard task).

If this event was organized a year ago, or more, I think it could be
easily done. If anyone wants to try it, be my guest. There are places
where it can be held (both I mentioned are free, btw) but I think the
timing now is wrong, concerning people outside Brazil.

Unless there is someone coming from outside to the World Cup (let us
know!), I don't think now its the best time to get tickets to Brazil.
