I thought I would just leap in and say Hi after joining the group. It has struck me recently that there is a place for z80 computing in the future, and I am glad that Symbos exists to take us there.<br>I was given a PCW 9512+ about a year ago, and did little with it till I realised that without the distractions offered by a fully internet connected PC with loads of processing power, it was possible to actually be a great deal more productive. However I am sure any PCW owners here are well aware that getting text off a PCW onto a PC is not the easiest task in the world.<br><br>This led me to a couple of conclusions. 1) in an ever more connected world where hackers are threatening to steal all our identities, rock the political establishment and even screw up elections, the importance of bare minimal systems with limited connectivity could be one of the most important directions to take in modern computing. After all, if all you do is a little typing and a few spreadsheets and databases, then
why risk putting that info onto a permanently internet connected computer with the power of an early cray supercomputer.<br><br>Conclusion 2) The PCW is so bare and minimal, and has such limited connectivity, that I am pretty much screwed in actually connecting it to the rest of the world at all. I am hoping that I gradually work out the best combinations or hardware and software, and the optimal ways of allowing a bit more connectivity, but I have been trying to work it out for some good long time now. Hopefully Symbos might give me a few more clues, but if there is anyone out there who has any advice on turning my PCW into less of an island I would be really grateful.<br><br>Conclusion 3) There really were a load of radically different approaches to computing before Microsoft swooped onto the scene and pushed all the competition away. Aside from the devices supported by this project there are a load of things being done on the old commodore machines at the very least. The use of a
commodore 64 in an episode in the last series of Mr Robot shows there is still a place for our machines in the modern world. All the tinkerers should take heart that they are not just the computing equivalent of medieval warfare re-enactors; you are all the guardians of a broad swathe of technology that must be protected and cared for until its time comes and it is needed again.<br><br>Having said that, I am now going to go check out the rest of the conversations in this group.<br><p><span><br class="yui-cursor"></span></p>
